National Schools Film Week is the largest free event for schools and cinemas in the world and aims to expose students to the rich social, cultural and enjoyable experience of viewing films in the cinema.

It was a fun day and a great end to such a productive half term. Well done to you all!

As part of our efforts to become a healthier school, students at Key Stage 4 took part in a fruit tasting session this afternoon. We tried to include a number of different fruits that many of us rarely, if ever, eat.

We tried passion fruit, pomegranate, mango, persimmon, pink grapefruit, kiwi fruit and figs. Pomegranate, mango and kiwi fruit seemed to be the popular choice – we’ll make sure to get some in for break-times.

Thanks to everyone who took part for showing such enthusiasm

Year 10 and 11 students took some time off from studying today to visit the Hollywood Bowl in Cardiff Bay. It was a fun afternoon particularly as we got to see Wayne doing his best Krusty the Klown impression!

It was a fitting end to the half term and we look forward to doing the same again before Christmas. Congratulations to Dan on being the bowling champ!

Today marked the last day of exams for our year 11 students and it was a day of mixed emotions; on the one hand there was a collective sigh of relief that the stresses of examinations had come to an end, but also sadness that such a great year group had finished their time at Key Stage 4. It’s days like this that really make you pause for a spot of reflection on how far some of our learners have come in the time that we’ve shared.

The fantastic support from Kim Hopkin (our Careers Wales advisor) means that most of our year 11s have now secured a place at College or Training, and those that haven’t have upcoming interviews or appointments. All the staff at the PRU would like to wish all our year 11 leavers the very best of luck in their next steps and hope that they’ll keep in touch and let us know how they’re getting on.

The results of the GCSE exams come out on Thursday 25th August, however the Entry Level results are released on the 5th July.

In the last few weeks students in year’s 11 and 12 have been busy working on the practical component of their entry Level Science course. Investigations have included discovering whether low fat or normal crisps contain the most energy (see pic), to whether a cup of tea is best poured in a black mug or a white mug (I won’t tell you the result – you’ll just have to ask a student!)

Entry Level Science requires that students complete 5 of these controlled assessments and so far nearly all our year 11 students have completed all that are required, whereas our year 10 students are working on them almost a year early! They’ve proved to be very popular with students and we’ve all had a lot of fun getting stuck in – well done to all involved!

Thanks to Careers Wales and Kim Hopkin – our Careers Wales advisor for Key Stage 4 – our year 11 [...]

Thanks to Careers Wales and Kim Hopkin – our Careers Wales advisor for Key Stage 4 – our year 11 students were able to visit some of the various training providers and colleges available to school leavers.

We started our day by visiting People’s Business and Rathbone on Holton Road in Barry – both of which specialise in preparing young people for the world of work as well providing vocational training in a variety of fields. They are also able to help learners improve their basic skills.

We then moved to Cardiff where we were given a tour of the amazing ACT provision. We saw the mechanics workshops, the construction area, the hair and beauty salon and even got to meet some of the weird and wonderful creatures in the animal care department!

Finally, after a pub-lunch courtesy of Careers Wales, we were able to visit Barry College to see the good work that they do.

Leaving school can be a daunting prospect for many and we hope to provide our students with the best possible advice and guidance we can. Fortunately we have a fantastic Careers advisor in Kim and many of our students have completed the necessary applications for their chosen path. Thanks Kim!
